We arrived into Skagway early in the morning. Following a quick breakfast and a quick trip down the gangway we made our way to the meeting point for our excursion. Today we were going dog sledding in the pouring rain.
The ride out to the dog sledding place was long but the time passed quickly as the scenery was beautiful and the driver made jokes and told stories of the history of the area. His favourite joke to tell was that if we met a bear on the road or while we were walking out to the sledding place, that they would have to sacrifice the youngest person the tour which thankfully was not me.
Once out at the dog sledding locations, we had a bit of a walk out to meet the Unimog which took us up the hill, almost vertically at times. As we got closer to the dogs we could hear the barking from all the teams. The sled ride was on 6 person carts and they were pulled by 16 dogs round a route 3 times before stopping. Our team driver at one of the stops took our cameras and took some photos of us and the dogs so that we could remember our time at the mushers camp.
After heading back down the hill on the Unimog again, we went to a shelter where one of the staff members talked about sled races and gave us all information on the dogs and how to care for them. After this, we got to head over to the breeding pens where the mums and pups were located, and where we got to have some puppy cuddles.
After the cuddles, we could head over to the gift shop and cafe, where hot coffee and souvenirs were available to buy. My mother got a Christmas decoration and a sled dog toy for me. I picked up a doggy bandana for my cousin's dog. After some time shopping, we walked back to the bus and headed back to Skagway. All the way back we had cloud cover with some mist which made the scenery look absolutely spectacular and incredibly mystical.
Once back in Skagway, we made our way back on the ship to dump our bags, dry off a little and grab some lunch, then we headed back onto the town to explore the stores and do some shopping. As we wandered down the streets and into almost every store that we came across, we picked up some items. As we walked through the streets admiring the view and felt really at home and comfortable. All that walking though was pretty painful to me, especially since I had potentially broken my toe and had my foot crammed into closed toe shoes when I wanted to be wearing my jandals.
Once we got back on the ship for the day, we quickly got ready for dinner and made our way do to the dining room where we put our order through but we had some spa appointments mum went to see if we would be able to have our meals sent up to our room for after the appointments.
After our appointments and dinner, we turned on the forward camera and watched as Skagway faded into the distance and we headed north to Glacier Bay.
