Flying for nearly 15 hours in economy sounds like a good idea in theory. In practice it ends with a stiff neck, back pain and an aggravated pinched nerve. On the plus side it does take you directly to Vancouver without having to go through any US airports.
Leaving work on that Friday, was emotional and ended with one colleague telling me that the email that I was typing up was not all that important and that she would drag me on my office chair to the elevator if I did not get ready to go at that moment. In reality that email I was typing up had all the instructions for while I was away and I was sending it to my managers, so it was the most important email that I needed to send that day.
Eventually I was off to the airport on the public bus with my little carry on suitcase. Mum took the day off so she was meeting me at the airport with my main luggage. The holiday did not feel entirely real until that moment when I met mum at the airport and checked in saying good bye to my luggage which I would not see again until I picked it up in Vancouver. It was nice to be off on holiday without any of the delays that had plagued the airline industry in New Zealand during the week leading up to our flight.
The big international flight was alright. The Gluten Free food was pretty good and they even had bread rolls and desserts from a pretty good company. Eventually we landed in Vancouver and made our way out to our hotel in the centre of the city. It was a pretty nice day and not all that hot. After checking into the hotel we went and made our way to the mall which was about 2 blocks away from the hotel. We did our shopping and even managed to find a pair of the rain boots that I had been wanting for this trip but are unable to get back at home. Dinner was at the food court of the mall and I found some of the best fries I have had while there.
That night we just stayed at the hotel and made contact with our family back at home and in Canada. And then jet lag kicked in and sleep did not come easily. Luckily for me I had the Canadaian version of Netflix to keep me company.
